The alpaca venipuncture / catheterization model is a rigid plastic model demonstrating the topography of the head and neck with a procedure window in the neck modeled in soft materials at the level of the preferred site for venopuncture. Palpable fluid filled vessel targets are affixed in anatomically correct positions within the model. Jugular and carotid vessels are supplied with variable pressure fluid reservoirs such that the flashback achieved upon vessel penetration corresponds to the pressure variance between the arterial and venous systems. Palpable osseous structures are embedded within the procedure area to allow identification of the appropriate target zone. Tough, pliable skin and soft tissue simulates encapsulate the vessel elements. The skin simulate demonstrates the characteristic resistance to needle puncture evident in this species.
The model is easily securely affixed to a table by means of two clamps. The height of the model may be adjusted via locking nuts attached to the model’s mounting post allowing target positioning consistent with an animal in standing and sternal recumbancy positions.
This model was custom designed and fabricated by Ben Kitchen, DVM as specified by Claire Whitehead, BVSc, DACVIM for use in the veterinary curriculum at the Ohio State University. Information regarding sales of this model or other instructional models may be obtained by contacting Ben Kitchen.
